Miller Edge UL 325 Safety for End Users

As of August 29, 2010, all Commercial Operators that are UL Listed require a connection to a monitored (4-wire or 2-wire terminated) Miller Edge or Photo eye. These safety sensors alert the gate operator that something or someone is obstructing the path of the gate. If this happens, the sensor will stop the gate from closing either by halting the system entirely or reversing the movement of the gate, depending on how the circuit is wired. This change in regulations has greatly effective the safety of people working or coexisting around these large industrial gates. Before the enforcement of these safety standards, commercial gates did not require these types of sensors and could hit or entrap a person or object when in motion, causing serious harm or even death to occur. Though these regulations have been ineffective for a while, some people may have questions on how to keep their commercial operator systems in compliance.

Commonly Asked Questions

What's the difference between monitored and non-monitored devices?

If a monitored device is disconnected or damaged, most operators will revert to constant pressure to close, so the user will know there is a problem. If a non-monitored device is disconnected or damaged, the only way a user will know is to maintain a regular test schedule. There is no warning or indication of a problem.

What is a monitored Miller Edge?

A monitored Miller Edge (4-wire or 2-wire terminated) is constructed so that the operator can check for the presence and proper operation of the edge. If the edge is disconnected or not working, most operators will revert to constant pressure to close.

What is a monitored Photo Eye?

A monitored Photo Eyes is comprised of a transmitter and a receiver that are placed on either end of the opening of the automated system. The transmitter emits a light beam, often infrared, that is detected by the receiver on the other end. If that light is interrupted in any way, the transmitter will trigger the operator to stop or reverse.

Can I use any monitored Miller Edge I choose?

Yes. All monitored ME, MT/MU, and CPT models manufactured by Miller Edge have been tested with all major manufacturers' operators as monitored reversing devices, so you can use Miller Edge Sensing Edges as the monitored device on commercial operators.

Can I use a monitored Miller Edge instead of a photo eye?

Yes, all major operator manufacturers have tested with Miller Edge products, and they are UL-approved as a monitored device.

Are the commercial operator additions to the UL standard the same as the residential requirements?

No, residential openers have separate requirements. Miller Edge manufactures edge sensors that meet both residential and commercial operators' standards, but they are different.

What is an ancillary device?

In most cases, it is any additional reversing device that is not monitored. Operator manufacturers are only required to monitor one device. When more than just one device is needed to provide a safe door system, the additional devices are referred to as "Ancillary" devices.

What Miller Edge products can I use as ancillary devices?

All 2-wire N/O edges, the Patriot, Invisi-Guard, Airwave, Pneumatic, and wireless products can be connected to the ancillary inputs of the operator.
